Camera for movies and photos are self-evident like GPS, Tablet or Notebooks. This website makes I quite obvious that I also do that. So here is an overview about the electronic devices.

For navigation I started with a Garmin GPSMAP62ST it’s not a bad system, but the display is to small and connecting it to the bikes battery via USB-Cable is not a good solution especially in rain. I got soon annoyed of changing batteries all the time and switched to the big brother Garmin Montana 600. Why not a Zumo? The Montana runs up to 10h on batteries. Therefore it’s easier to use on rental bikes, you can take it with you for a stroll in unknown towns and I can also use it on my mountain bike. You can also use your Smartphone for all these purposes but how long is the battery run-time of a smartphone in permanent use? Apart from that I don’t want to deal with optimized systems for every purpose. The more you know your equipment the more it helps.
A basic option you should set in any GPS System is the Map direction. The map must be static orientated to north. It is very difficult to keep the overall orientation when the map is turning all the time. If you take a wrong junction because you mixed up with right or left it’s a small problem compared to a loss of overall orientation. If you are redirected or obstacles are in your way you can make fast decision easily and this will happened all the time.
I’m not really happy with my GoPro. The quality is great but it is always so obvious that you wear it and the battery runtime is a cheek. I never used the wifi remote because self discarging is so high that you have to charge it all the time. Maybe I replace it with a Sena 10C soon. It will be a loose in quality but at least I gain the functionality of a communication system and it’s not so obvious.
My camera equipment is an essential part of my gear. I spend a lot of my time for photographs and videos. With my Olympus OM-D E-M1 I found a good compromise between size and handling. It’s amazing how fast you can change exposure time or aperture. The grip gives you a safe feeling even if you take photos while driving. The speed of that camera is so incredible high that you can’t blame the camera if you miss an action picture. The image stabilisation system works so good that it’s nearly impossible to blur a picture. But the most important feature is that it brought back my joy to photography after I was so fed up of my slow and heavy Canon EOS600.

The Tablets no matter if the Surface or the Venue Tab are to write my reports, take notes, copy and move pictures. When I’m abroad I want to take notes to help myself to remember all the experiences. Investing as much time keeping a blog up to date like I did during Balkan Compact is not my plan for the future. I can do that work much faster on my desk at home and stay free to concentrate on my trip. Despite this there are rainy days or waiting times all during every trip that I can use for that work. That is one reason for the surface even if I primarily bought it for use at home. It’s much more powerful than the Venue Tab and would offer me to rework my pictures and videos on the run. The Venue Tab is enough for notes and backup of pictures. Keeping the Blog up to date with it would be a big waste of time.
